A styled fall porch in Greenville, SC

How to Style a Fall Porch in Greenville (So It Doesn't Look Like Everyone Else's)

Okay. Fall porch season is my Super Bowl.

But can I be honest? Most fall porches look… the same. Three orange pumpkins. A store-bought mum. Done.

Nothing wrong with it. But you clicked on this, so let's do better.

Rule one: pumpkins in odd numbers — and more than you think

One pumpkin is lonely. Two is a pair. You want a pile — clustered, layered, spilling a little.

And skip the all-orange bag. Mix it:

  • Creamy whites
  • Muted greens
  • Terra cotta and warm tan
  • A few big, a lot of small

Odd numbers. Uneven heights. That's the whole trick.

Rule two: go vertical

Everyone styles the floor and stops. Then the door looks bare and the whole thing feels flat.

Add height:

  • A branch or magnolia stem in a tall vessel
  • Foliage climbing the door frame
  • Something on the steps and something at eye level

Your porch should draw the eye up — not just down at a pile of gourds.

Rule three: real texture beats plastic every time

Here in the Upstate, our falls run long and warm — so I style with dried and preserved botanicals, seasonal foliage, and the occasional fresh stem. Things that last the whole season and age beautifully.

Plastic reads as plastic. Even from the driveway.

Rule four: it should match your house

A muted brick house wants different pumpkins than a crisp white farmhouse. Your porch should feel like an extension of your home — not a display that could be anyone's.

That's usually the difference between "cute" and "wow, who did that?"

Or… let me do it

Real talk: a good porch is 60 pumpkins, a floral install, and a couple of hours you probably don't have on a September weekend.

That's exactly what I do. Here in Greenville I'll bring the pumpkins, the florals, and the eye, and style your porch for the season — you just open the door and enjoy it.
